Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther, Creed) is set to produce DC Comics’ superhero movie, Static Shock. Jordan will join Milestone Media’s Reginald Hudlin, who revealed in August at DC FanDome that serious conversations about developing a theatrical feature film on Static Shock were taking place.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Jordan will produce it through his Warner Bros based Outlier Society banner. “I’m proud to be a part of building a new universe centered around black superheroes; our community deserves that,” Jordan said in a statement. “Outlier Society is committed to bringing to life diverse comic book content across all platforms and we are excited to partner with Reggie and Warner Bros on this initial step.”
Appeared first in 1993 in Static #1, Static was created by Milestone Comics (now a defunct company) founders Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle. It was written by McDuffie and Robert L. Washington III, and illustrated by John Paul Leon. The comic book follows the story of Virgil Ovid Hawkins/Static who gains a variety of electromagnetic powers after being doused with an experimental chemical in a gang war he was caught up in. He eventually becomes a costumed crusader against crime.
The character has also been featured in various animated films, series and video games. DC is relaunching Milestone with Hudlin, now a partner in the label, at the center of it. He is writing an all-new Static Shock digital comic series beginning in February 2021, as well as an additional Static Shock graphic novel by Hudlin, with art by Kyle Baker. A series reviving Milestone heroes, Icon and Rocket, by Hudlin and Milestone founder Denys Cowan, are also in the works.
As for Static Shock feature film, Warner Bros is yet to reveal any details regarding the cast and its release slate.
