Netflix original ‘Next Gen’ probes a light-hearted human-robot relationship of companionship

Whilst the millennials portend a revolution in the matters of the heart apropos of humans and robots potentially developing relationships in near future, Netflix’s upcoming animation flick Next Gen portrays a light-hearted take on the theory when a young girl and an android strike companionship after braving certain tough circumstances together.

Mai, the female protagonist in question, initially appears unimpressed and unfazed at the unveiling of the most advanced droid in the city, but an intrigue is sparked when one day she’s accidentally nosedived into an underground laboratory to witness a robot that’s seemingly a work in progress. But the bot’s soon set in motion and Mai and the walking-talking machine could then be seen developing a cutesy, innocent human-robot bond.

Co-directed by Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander, Next Gen is based on the original Chinese comic 7723 by Wang Nima and probes how a socially misfit school-girl finds friendship in the most unlikely entity as 7723, the robot, and her can be seen breaking into shenanigans right in the middle of a busy street, as well as uniting forces when a rogue robot threatens to destroy the city.

Jason Sudeikis, Michael Pena, David Cross and Charlyne Yi form a stellar voice cast as Next Gen premieres on Netflix on 7 September 2018.
