Marvel and Sony’s search for the new Spiderman ends with ‘The Impossible’ star, Tom Holland

Finally after months of speculations about who would be donning the Spidey suit alongside Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes, The Avengers, both Sony and Marvel have boiled down to the British actor Tom Holland as the chosen one.

In the early months of this year, Sony Pictures made the wisest deal according to fans collaborating over Marvel’s Spiderman rights with none other than the comic’s in-house production, Marvel Studios.  Under the deal, Marvel President, Kevin Feige announced that the new Spiderman would be appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Sony’s all plans for the extending The Amazing Spiderman franchise was scraped off which starred Andrew Garfield as the web-slinger. Although the rebooted two installments of The Amazing Spiderman franchise amassed over $1.46 billion in its world-wide gross, Sony’s Spidey sense triggered on time when the sequel, The Amazing Spiderman 2 failed to surpass the original at the box office.

Following the earlier rumors, Ender’s Game star, Asa  Butterfield was in the forefront in playing the new Spidey, however post several rounds of audition, Marvel and Sony have adjudicated Tom Holland a better pick for the role. Apart from this Tom will also be seen alongside another Avenger, Chris Hemsworth in the upcoming movie, In the Heart of the Sea and in another adventure drama flick, Pilgrimage along with Richard Armitage.

As per the latest reports, Cop Car director, Jon Watts will be the man helming the standalone Spiderman movie which is slated for July 28, 2017, however fans would be graced a cameo of Tom’s Spiderman in the upcoming Captain America – The Civil War (2016) which already boasts an excessive dose of superheroes and Spiderman being one of the key ones introduced in it.

Commenting on the latest update, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group chairman, Tom Rothman announced in the press release that, “I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. Also for Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”
