VFX Red Chillies VFX releases 'Dunki' visual effects breakdown

From water simulation to usage of motion control, Redchillies.vfx reveals the making of ‘Dunki’

Redchillies.vfx (RCVFX) has released the VFX breakdown (contains spoilers) of the Hindi film Dunki on YouTube.

Starring Shah Rukh Khan (SRK), Tapsee Pannu, Boman Irani, Anil Grover, Vikram Kochhar and Vicky Kaushal (in a special appearance), Dunki hit theatres worldwide on 21 December 2023. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani (3 Idiots, PK, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.), the film is presented by Red Chillies Entertainment, Jio Studios and Rajkumar Hirani Films. The visual effects and DI for the film were done by Redchillies.vfx and Redchillies.color respectively, the esteemed VFX and color grading studio under the umbrella of Red Chillies Entertainment.

Dunki tells the story of a group of friends who set out on a perilous journey to emigrate to the United Kingdom via a clandestine route called “donkey flight,” risking their lives in the process.

Redchillies.vfx brought to life numerous sequences through visual effects – the use of motion control to create Mannu’s (played by Pannu) 360-degree montage, the humorous CG hair shot, desert train journeys, the character Sukhi (played by Kaushal) lighting himself on fire, creation of Indian localities and more. The part in the breakdown video that stands out the most is the underwater sequence involving the actors, which demands seamless CG water simulation. The video shows the actors using harnesses to play the underwater part, shot against the blue screen on land.

RCVFX’s Keitan Yadav has served as the VFX producer, Harry Hingorani as VFX supervisor and Ken Metzker as the colourist. The team has won the Best VFX in Feature Film at the FICCI BAF Awards 2024.

RCVFX previously also released the visual effects breakdown of the SRK-starrer Jawan.
