DreamWorks’ new Voltron animated series to stream on Netflix this June

DreamWorks Animation and Netflix will bring the 80’s robotic adventure back with its new animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender that will debut on Netflix on 10 June, 2016. DWA unveiled a sneak peek of this upcoming animated series at Wondercon recently.

Voltron: Legendary Defender is based on a mid ’80s American TV series called Voltron: Defender of the Universe, in which five pilots command robotic lions that can be combined into a single super-robot called Voltron.

The recent teaser released reveals a similar plot and seems to be an action packed animation series with the use of enhanced music.

Joaquim Dos Santos who has previously worked on Justice League, Teen Titans serves as the executive producer along with Lauren Montgomery while, Tim Hedrick acts as the writer of the series.

Dos Santos said, “As children of the 80’s who grew up with Voltron what was there not to love? You had 5 awesome lions, piloted by 5 awesome heroes who combined to form a giant, sword wielding Titan! It unapologetically married sci-fi and fantasy in one incredibly over the top, bombastic package. Fans of the new series (Voltron: Legendary Defender) can look for us to keep all those elements but also expect a much more fleshed out universe with a rich backstory and characters who will evolve over the course of the series.”

The voice cast for the series include Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) as Keith; Jeremy Shada (Adventure Time) as Lance; Bex Taylor-Klaus (Arrow) as Pidge; Josh Keaton (Green Lantern: The Animated Series) as Shiro (formerly “Sven”); Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil) as Hunk; Kimberly Brooks (Mass Effect) as Princess Allura; and Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords) as Coran. King Zarkon will be voiced by Neil Kaplan (Transformers: Robots in Disguise).

After a gap of almost three decades, we can expect few tweaks and addition of characters in the upcoming Voltron series. However, the central idea remains the same probably to make the series easily recognisable. The first 13 episodes of Voltron: Legendary Defender will feature on the online streaming service, Netflix.
