What type of gamer are you?

The digital gaming industry is booming in India right now. In 2021, we were ranked fifth in the world in terms of gaming population, and innovation has continued to gather pace since then.

Today’s video games have truly pushed the boundaries of what technology is capable of delivering. With so many gaming experiences now within our grasp, from playing on mobiles to gaming in Virtual Reality, have you ever wondered what type of gamer you are?

Different Types of Gaming Styles

In 1996, a British game researcher published a paper that classified gamers by their player types. Regarded as the definitive classification for gaming styles, Bartle’s paper even led to the creation of the Bartle Test of Gaming Psychology by Edwin Andreason and Bradley Downey.

While the test itself can tell gamers where on the Bartle Quotient they fall, it’s rather academic in its nature and contains 30 different questions.

Generally speaking, however, there are lots of different types of gaming styles. Here are five of the most common.

Strategic Gamers – You’ll find yourself in this category if you enjoy real-time strategy gaming, or playing games that are turn-based. With exceptional critical thinking, the ability to plan five steps in advance, and the patience to be in the game for the long haul, as a strategic player, you need something that engages your grey matter.

Games like Supreme Commander and the Civilization series will be right up your street. Strategy gamers also enjoy playing digital card games. For example, hole card blackjack  is full of subtle nuances that will keep the most calculated gamers engaged as they play.

RPG Gamers – Do you enjoy getting lost in complex character creation, or letting the story of a game develop over a long timeframe? If so, you’re an RPG gamer. Luckily for you, the RPG category is one of the most prolific, so there’ll always be games for you for as long as there is a gaming industry to produce them.

Look for games with immersive environments and volumes of backstories and lore to explore. The Elder Scrolls series, Skyrim, and the Fallout franchise are two perfect options to try.

Multi-Players – Multi-player gamers love getting involved in team or opponent-based games, no matter what genre or category they fall into. If you haven’t already, you need to be playing MMORPG (massively-multiplayer online role-playing games) or Battle Royale games to ensure your gaming sessions leave you fulfilled.

MMORPGs are perfect for the more sociable gamers, since you can connect with hundreds of other gamers from all over the world. Depending on the game you’re playing, you can team up to meet key objectives, or just head on out into the wilderness if the game has open-world elements.

Battle royale games, meanwhile, are for multiplayer gamers with a more competitive streak. These fast-paced fighting extravaganzas take their name from the hit Japanese movie – which should indicate just how rowdy the action can get.

For classic MMORPG gaming, you really can’t beat World of Warcraft. Battle royale gamers, on the other hand, would be wise to check out Apex Legends or Call of Duty: Warzone.

Platformers – If you find yourself hearkening back to the glory days of console gaming, when you’d invest huge chunks of your week taking Mario on his mission to rescue Princess Peach, you fall into the platform gaming style.

Just like all those old-school 1990s games, modern platforms and side-scrollers involve constant action in any direction. Throughout games, you need to run, jump, collect items and traverse different planes, all the while avoiding any baddies that might spring out at you.

For some new platform gaming experiences in 2022, check out Hollow Knight and Celeste.

Casual Gamers – Prefer small doses of gaming action on the fly? Or maybe you’d rather spend your time solving puzzles? If RPG games leave you yawning and battle royale multi-players sound like far too much effort, count yourself amongst the globe’s casual gaming population.

As someone who simply enjoys gaming for the fun of it, mobile gaming apps are undoubtedly your first port of call. Luckily, 2022 has some excellent casual and hypercasual games on the horizon, so keep your eyes peeled for Alto’s Odyssey, Cats Are Cute and FishingLife.
