“Practice and Practice till you get perfect.” When it comes to student films, especially those who are just starting out, the habit of making short films comes first and with practice comes technique and finesse. Students of Arena Animation, Malleswaram have just completed two new stop motion short films named “Believe it or Not “and “Better to quit”. Both the films highlight the social issues with a comic approach to help people understand the message behind the same.

The 2 minuter Stop Motion movies were made within 10 days with complete dedication of six students divided into two groups.

“Believe it or not” highlights a poor farmer and his pitiful condition. A farmer, living on a dry land is in need of water for agriculture and is cursing his fate till he finds a popular mint which he eats and suddenly the surroundings change and he becomes rich. The movie begins with a serious note thereby touching upon the prevailing social issue and later takes a humorous approach.
“Better to Quit” highlights the desperation of the person to smoke and finally not finding a place to smoke, he throws the cigarette in the dustbin.

Speaking to Animationxpress.com about the challenges faced during developing the films Jagadeesh Gokhale, 2D Studio head, Arena It Animation Malleswaram, said that. ““We faced quite a few challenges in implementing the project. Lighting and Camera movements were some of the major issues. Variation in light used to be there since we used to shoot all day long and we had to tackle this problem by using reflectors for uniform light throughout the day. We used a digital camera for shooting and because of camera jerks, we had some difficulties and hence had to use tripod to give stability to camera shots. But still the problems persisted since the camera used to shake when we manually click, hence then we changed the entire setup and connected it through computers and controlled by the same.”

Advising the upcoming animators Jagdeesh says. “Animation is an art of breathing life into inanimate objects and it requires a lot of passion and creativity along with patience and those who have the willpower to achieve big in this field can go great lengths provided they put their heart and soul and put life in their creative ideas and share it with the world. It takes years to become a world class animators and only people with patience and a never die spirit will succeed”.

Sharing the experience about the making of the shorts, one of the students, Nikitha Rani shared “I was introduced to stop motion animation through my tutor at Arena Animation Malleswaram and instantly I liked the concept and took up the challenge of doing my first project on this wonderful but time consuming concept. I am very happy with the results that my efforts have produced and look forward to creating more and better quality works in future”.

Another student Bindushree who was also part of the team that worked on these films says “I had seen many short films on Stop Motion Animation and was always curious about how it was done. I was fortunate to get an opportunity to pursue my interest at Arena Animation Malleswaram and am very satisfied with the results.”.
