Lucasfilm onboards YouTuber known for baffling deepfakes

A Deepfake YouTuber who acts under the pseudonym “Shamook” has confirmed that they have been hired by Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light and Magic. The YouTuber had gained popularity for creating a surprise cameo in The Mandalorian.

Shamook is famous for creating a range of Deepfake videos on YouTube. Replacing Tom Cruise with Brendan Fraser in The Mummy reboot, or fixing existing effects as they did with the de-aged Luke Skywalker in the season two finale of The Mandalorian, the channel is known for spectacular results.

Although Indiewire’s report has confirmed with Industrial Light and Magic that Shamook joined the team there, not much is known about their designation as of yet. Like many studios, Industrial Light and Magic is interest in machine learning and AI which is evident from their recent projects.

“[ILM] is always on the lookout for talented artists and have in fact hired the artist that goes by the online persona ‘Shamook’… Over the past several years ILM has been investing in both machine learning and A.I. as a means to produce compelling visual effects work and it’s been terrific to see momentum building in this space as the technology advances,” a company representative said in a statement.

Shamook shared on his channel that they will be keen on posting more videos on their YouTube.
