Bechain Nagri, loosely translated as Restless Town is a space to share, collaborate and create. Bechain Nagri has been created by a group of restless people-cum-students who were looking for a way to fund their education and also to do something more with their talent and skills.
The idea was conceived earlier this year when a group of animators, entrepreneur and engineers came together and worked on their first project of making sketchbooks with illustrated covers. Since the group members lived in different parts of India they set up a small studio on facebook, where ideas were shared, discussed and drawings and illustrations were finalized. Between eleven odd illustration enthusiasts, lot of varied work popped up, from Indian superheroes to tribal art to classroom comics to beautiful looking ink and watercolour work. These artworks were used as cover illustration for notebooks and diaries which were then put on sale.
The books met with an enthusiastic response at NID’s intercollege fest, RGB, and the group decided to continue working on it in their spare time. So now Bechain Nagri has more illustrators and also an engineer quit his job to work for Bechain Nagri. They also set up an online store and entered the retail market as well.
Bechain Nagri is looking forward to create a system where creatives can come together and work on projects they really want to do. According to the members of Bechain Nagri work gets converted into tangible products and artists will earn royalty from every product that’s sold. This way just one illustration can get them money for a really long time. The royalty amount builds up over years into a large amount. This money can then be used to work on independent projects like short films, graphic novels and that dream project never got done for the lack of time and resources. The members are also hopeful that if things work out they’ll be able to produce their own content someday in the form of feature film or TV series.
Bechain Nagri is aiming to be a space, a meeting ground of sorts for restless, fidgety people who are itching to do something, to come together to share work and collaborate on fun projects.
