Association of Bangalore Animation Industry (ABAI)recently organized a 3 day Lighting Workshop titled ‘Beauty of Bright’ w
hich took the attendees through the world of Lighting by discussing aesthetics, integration of arts with technology, technicalities, working methodology, team coordination, balancing workload & efficient work flow, quality check etc.
16 participants were part of this workshop, conducted by Shashi Kammari, Project Manager at ABAI, having Industry wide experience at DQ, Prana, Pixion & Maya Entertainment.

Shashi, says, “Many of the students have had technical knowledge, but there is a lack of real world observation and understanding of the dynamics of the light. Initially, it was challenging for them to achieve what they wanted to, but each session helped create a change in students approach, allowing the importance of aesthetics and its integration with software tools”.
Workshop initiated with real world light transitions and properties such as colors, shadows, intensity & direction. All the references showcased related to the aesthetic intent of the image. Workshop defined the goals of lighting and explained how to use lighting to accomplish each goal.
When asked Shashi about the technical doubts that the attendees had, he says, “Most of the doubts were about placing lights and methodology of lighting. With reference to theoretical session we have facilitated practical sessions and provided personal guidance to make them follow the principles and methodology of lighting used for background and characters. As a mentor, I have made sure they understand, albeit without a proper knowledge of real-world light, how digital lighting may appear odd or unnatural. The session helped students to apply the appropriate techniques to achieve the best possible digital lighting for their project”.

ABAI has planned a series of workshops throughout this year; which started with “Evoking Actor in Character” workshop on Acting that was held in January, “Beauty of Bright” was the second in the series.
