Star Wars crosses $1bn mark in a record time

Since the release of the Star Wars: Force Awakens, the force has been strong with the movie, achieving box-office collection of $1 billion in a record time.

The Walt Disney said The Force Awakens crossed the billion-dollar mark on Sunday, accomplishing the feat in just 12 days. Universal’s Jurassic World was the previous record holder and had reached the magic number in 13 days in June. Jurassic World also had the benefit of record grosses in China. The Force Awakens doesn’t open in the world’s second-largest movie market until 9 January.

Not only this, J.J. Abrams’ directed Star Wars Episode VIII also broke the biggest Christmas Day box office record in history with $49.3 million and the best second-weekend earnings with $153.5 million.

The Force Awakens has been setting records since its debut 17 December in North America and has brought in a galactic $238 million over its opening weekend, besting previous record-setter Jurassic World, and set international opening-weekend records in Australia, New Zealand and throughout Europe. It scored the biggest worldwide debut with $529 million. It also topped $100 million in IMAX screenings in 10 days, another global record.

The India numbers for the movie are also encouraging with it collecting $691,000 in the opening weekend. The movie released in 1,230 screens and might not be able to break India records which is held by Furious 7 $26.8 million, Jurassic World which grossed $22.9 million, followed by Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s $16.8 million this year.
