‘Star Citizen’ surpasses $300 million in crowdfunding

Developer of Cloud Imperium Games has now raised over $300 million in funding for Star Citizen from its players after seven years of its original kickstarter. As I write this, 2,711,428 people have pledged a total of $300,145,173, mostly through buying expensive digital spaceships for amounts that might make an ordinary person question their life choices.

In all, there are 2,712,305 “star citizens” although naturally, not all of those are paying players, particularly as Cl recently ran a free-week at the end of May 2020. The accolade comes at the same time as Star Citizen launched Alien Week, which includes an all-new video which sees members of the narrative team answer player questions about “the lore, history, and background on the alien races of Star Citizen“.

Back in December, Cloud Imperium Games crossed the $250 million mark with a particularly good month netting them roughly $11 million, but player investment dropped to a “mere” five or six million each month following that. Until May, when their monthly total suddenly soared to over $15 million. As Altchar points out, this might be due to the release of the Drake Complete Pack 2950, a bundle of 14 ships which sold for $4,600.The grand total right now is $300,355,763 raised from 2,712,248 people, so yes, that means the average donation per contributor is over $100, so more than any $60 box game would have cost.
