Sony PlayStation 4 ousts Xbox One in US for November

Sony continues to give sleepless nights to honchos at Microsoft, as its PlayStation 4 has managed to outperform in sales figures for the month of November 2015. Sony revealed today ahead of the NPD Group’s official report for the month. The tables as they say have turned, when back in October 2015, Xbox One had outsold Sony’s console in the US, breaking Sony’s hold atop the charts.

In a statement, Sony reiterated that PlayStation had its “strongest” Black Friday ever, though no official numbers for the shopping period were announced. Microsoft, too, had a strong Black Friday this year, the company announced last week.

Both the PS4 and Xbox One were offered for $300 on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The systems are available at that reduced price now, too, as part of new limited-time offers.

Sony’s Eric Lempel added that November 2015 was the “biggest month ever for PlayStation Store indicating a strong digital marketplace complementing healthy retail sales.”

In its own statement, Microsoft did not share any specific hardware numbers. However, the company said November 2015 was the best November on record for Xbox One in the US, setting new records for console sales, game sales, and Xbox Live engagement.”

Nintendo issued its own statement, too, confirming that Amiibo figures sold 1.2 million units in November, bringing their lifetime tally in the US to over 11 million. However, Wii U and 3DShardware sales were not announced.

The holiday season has proved to be critical for console and game makers globally; and they bank heavily on it for the major chunk of their annual sales. Two years ago, Microsoft and Sony used the season as the launching point for their current generation of consoles, and their timing was spot on: Consumer demand was so great that retailers often couldn’t keep the Xbox One and PS4 in stock. This year, both are continuing the tradition with promotions and sales to lure buyers, and it’s paying off with strong demand for both the consoles.
