Modi flags animation, gaming and concerts as India’s new soft-power engines

PM Narendra Modi addresses India's gaming indsutry

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has identified animation, VFX, gaming, digital content and the concert economy as important components of India’s soft-power ambitions.

In his Independence Day address, Modi placed soft power among the seven streams of strength that he said would drive India’s next phase of growth. He specifically pointed to the country’s creative industries and their potential to reach global audiences.

“India can actively show its incredible dominance inside the creative world, and we will absolutely have to develop it as a global capability,” Modi said.

He also highlighted the growing potential of the concert economy, noting that international artists are increasingly looking towards India as a destination for live performances. For India’s AVGC sector, the message comes at an important time, as the country looks to move beyond being a production hub and build stronger original IP, global franchises and creative businesses.

With initiatives such as Waves supporting the country’s push into the global entertainment ecosystem, Modi’s remarks signal that creative industries are increasingly being viewed as part of India’s broader global influence, not just as entertainment businesses.
