Goosebumps bumps The Martian and tops the weekend box office chart

The book that sent chills down our spine but made us crave more for it, Goosebumps which has been written by the Stephen King of Children’s literature, R.L.Stine. It’s one of the most loved horror books for teens and this year it got its own movie by Rob Letterman which released in North America this weekend and has managed to captivate its audiences all over again.

GoosebumpsStarring Jack Black as R.L Stine, the movie revolves around the story of a teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) who unintentionally unleashes the monsters from the manuscripts written by Jack Black and now with help of his friend Champ (Ryan Lee), Jack’s beautiful daughter Hannah (Odeya Rush) and Jack, they have to get them all in the books where they belong.

The film released on 16 October and has managed to get 72 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes and 7.3 rating from IMDb. As for the box-office sales records, it managed to collect roughly $23.5 million over the weekend outpacing two other new releases (Crimson Peak and Bridge of Spies) as well as Fox’s The Martian. With Goosebumps coming out from Sony Pictures Entertainment, this is yet another successful family based movie right after Hotel Transylvania 2 which came out last month and is has managed to sustain in the 5th box office position.

The recent debacle of Pixels had put Sony Pictures on a back-foot, but with these two releases and the next James Bond movie Spectre, things are looking bright for the production and distribution company.

Goosebumps book which was published by Scholastic and has sold over 350 million copies since the series’ introduction in 1992, also got a TV series in 1995. Since 1992, 62 books were published under the Goosebumps umbrella title with various spin-offs totally up to 182 books. The TV series was originally broadcasted in the UK as a part of BBC’s children’s program lineup on CBBC and later it came on Jetix now known as Disney XD. The series got 4 seasons and 74 episodes.

With Halloween just around the corner, releasing Goosebumps at this time was a smart move that will attract more audiences in the coming weeks. The movie is set to release in India on 30 October.
