Google and LG ink a deal for a cross licensing patent partnership till 2023

LG and Google in a joint statement have said that they have agreed upon a cross license deal between them till the year 2023.  Both the companies have entered the partnership keeping in mind the risk of lawsuits that are currently happening between the major tech companies.

“LG values its relationship with Google, and this agreement underscores both companies’ commitment to developing new products and technologies that enhance consumers’ lives,” said JH Lee, EVP and Head of LG Electronics’ Intellectual Property Center.

The patent partnership covers a broad range of products and technologies built by both the companies, existing as well as the ones they will file over the next ten years. Financial particulars of the deal were not revealed during the announcement.

“We’re pleased to enter into this agreement with a leading global technology giant like LG,” said Allen Lo, Google’s deputy general counsel, in a statement.

Google is not new to patent partnerships, where in January, this year it had struck a similar deal with South Korean tech giant Samsung. Google’s deal with Samsung was on the account that Samsung doesn’t stray away from its Android OS to its own long in line Tizen.

The partnership with LG is a little confusing keeping in mind LG does not have any OS developments in line up and has been a long standing partner with the tech giant producing its previous flagship phones Nexus 4 and 5.
