Disney’s think tank gunning for Marvel and Star Wars TV channels

Disney’s Marvel has been actively rolling out tent-pole films based on its popular characters which began with Iron Man in 2008 and has since never looked back with films in the pipeline till 2019. On the short format front too, Marvel has its hands full with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Marvel’s Daredevil. With so much content available, Disney is mulling over the idea of a dedicated TV channel for Marvel and Star Wars respectively.

“We have said that with these channels and these brands – ESPN, ABC, Disney, maybe even down the road something related to Star Wars and Marvel – we do have an ability as a company to take product, specifically filmed entertainment, television, movies, directly to consumers,” said Disney CEO Bob Iger during a conference call with investors when he was asked if the company planned to launch its own streaming service, reported Daily Finance.

Marvel superheroes are currently booming on the big and small screens. After rolling out Avengers: Age of Ultron, the company is prepping for Ant-Man on 17 July and filming Captain America: Civil War for 2016 release.

This year will also see a Star Wars reboot under the helm of JJ Abrams – Star Wars: The Force Awakens which is going to hit theatres on 18 December. With spin-off Rogue One to follow in 2016 and Star Wars: Episode VIII in 2017 and two more movies in the pipeline. On television too, Star Wars already had a hit series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and is now looking to repeat that success with Star Wars: Rebels.
