Johnny Depp is ready to make misery his business. The actor steps into the shoes of Ebenezer Scrooge in Ebenezer, Paramount Pictures’ dark reimagining of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
A new featurette offers a glimpse of Depp’s take on the famously miserly character. Rather than playing Scrooge as just another greedy old man, the actor looks to explore what lies beneath his bitter exterior.
Speaking about his approach to the character in the featurette, Depp shared, “With Ebenezer Scrooge, I was looking for a different way in than just the idea of this miserable, greedy old guy. Nobody’s born mean or with some ambition to just piss everyone off. Reflecting on the timeless appeal of A Christmas Carol. There are deep messages that are very profound. But at the same time I am going to see the humour in it.”
Directed by Ti West, Ebenezer features a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern, based on Dickens’ novella A Christmas Carol. The film stars Depp alongside Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes and Charlie Murphy, with Tramell Tillman and Ian McKellen also part of the cast.
Emma Watts produces the film, while West, Adam Bohling, David Reid, Stephen Deuters, Jason Forman, Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, Andrew Lary, Molly Smith, Thad Luckinbill and Trent Luckinbill serve as executive producers.
With a darker take on a familiar Christmas tale, Ebenezer aims to give Scrooge a fresh lease of life. Indian audiences can catch Depp’s transformation when the film releases in cinemas on 20 November 2026.
