‘Archie’ to be adapted as ‘Riverdale’ on small screen; Fox to air the series

The popular characters from the Archie comics are reportedly headed for the small screen as an adaptation based on the comic book is in progress.

After Fox gained the rights of the TV adaptation of the comic series, Archie will now be a one-hour drama on TV, titled Riverdale. The project will have Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is best known for his Glee, as a writer, while it will be produced by Greg Berlanti, of Arrow and The Flash fame.

“This is a historic moment for Archie Comics, and we couldn’t be happier to partner with Fox, Warner Bros and Greg Berlanti to bring our characters to television,” said Archie Comics publisher/co-CEO Jon Goldwater in a press announcement. “Greg and Roberto are experts when it comes to making great, compelling television and bringing beloved comic book creations to life on the screen. They’re the perfect team to welcome viewers to Riverdale,” he added.

Riverdale follows the lives of Archie, Betty, Veronica and their friends as they explore the surrealistic twists of small-town life, in addition to the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade.

This is the first time that Archie will appear on the small screen. Earlier, in 1970s, US television had aired a live-action special of Archie and other characters from the comic series. Thereafter, in 1990, NBC had aired a TV movie titled Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again.
