Apple ropes in former Dolby VP to focus on audio and video technologies

The search for third party apps for the next innovation from the Apple stable – Apple Watch – has begun and so has Apple’s search for the right people to take the smartphone giant in the right direction. In doing so Apple has hired former Dolby VP Mike Rockwell.

He served as the executive vice president of Advanced Technology Group at Dolby and was primarily in charge of the company’s innovation department and development of new businesses.

With the news that has just come in, Mike is now on-board Apple and all set to head the hardware department of the company. The announcement follows the rumour that the company is hiring Mike to strengthen its audio and display for Apple products. Among these products are next-gen Apple Monitors which inculde the 5K retina monitors recently displayed in November last year.

While Dolby is best-known for multichannel audio solutions, Mike was involved majorly in Dolby Vision, a “state-of-the-art colour display technology” designed to improve the colour rendition and brightness of high-definition displays and capture tools, among other projects.

As it seems, Apple is on a roll of hiring top-notch personnel from other companies in order to strengthen itself, with Mike now having joined the queue of executives including  Dana Massie, the Digital Audio Expert at Audience, and Tomlinson Holman, the man who played an integral role in Lucasfilm’s THX sound.
