The 20th annual Sommets du cinéma d’animation wraps up with the award ceremony

The 20th annual Sommets du cinéma d’animation drew it’s curtains with their award ceremony. Among 37 films in competition, Angakuksajaujuq- The Shaman’s Apprentice by Inuk director Zacharias Kunuk and Meneath: The Hidden Island Of Ethics by Métis director Terril Calder. Calder was the subject of a retrospective of her eight previous short films during the Sommets. 

For this year’s new format, the Canadian competition was taken forward through four programs, including 37 short films from all across the country.  

“The new format of the Sommets was made possible by a much larger selection of Canadian works than what we used to offer. Through the various approaches, from experimental to narrative films, including music videos, commissioned films and educational ones, an extraordinary know-how is displayed on the screens of the Cinémathèque québécoise,” Sommets du cinéma d’animation founder and artistic director Marco de Blois said.

The jury of the Canadian Competition, in charge of awarding five prizes, was composed of École Émile Cohl – France director, teacher Jean-Charles Mbotti Malolo, Concordia University director, teacher Shira Avni, director, media artist Pixie Cram, actor, director  Olivier Morin and writer, director Marya Zarif. 

Here are the five winners:

  1. The Guy L Cote Grand Prize for the best animated film- Angakuksajaujuq- The Shaman’s Apprentice by Zacharias Kunuk
  2. Special Jury Award- École NAD-UQAC- Meneath: The Hidden Island Of Ethics by Terril Calder
  3. Best Character- Louisiane Gervais — Pas De Titre by d’Alexandra Myotte
  4. Best Music Video- VERT – Harmonium Symphonique by Vince Hurtubise, Marcella Grimaux and Gabriel Poirier-Galarneau
  5. People’s Choice Award- Triangle Noir  by Marie-Noëlle Moreau Robidas

The jury for the Student Competition was composed of École NAD-UQAC director, teacher Ileana Dana Darie, Collège de Bois-de-Boulogne teacher Michel Murray and UQAT Campus Montreal teacher Erwan Davisseau. 

The Award went to Sound Lab  by Nicolas Bertrand.

Meneath: The Hidden Island Of Ethics

The jury of the Pitch Competition was composed of H264 president and founder Jean-Christophe J. Lamontagne, CORUS production manager Hugues Dufour and  Kaïbou Production producer Anne Pagès. 

This Award went to Moving On Moving Forward by Rui Ting Ji.

The Sommets event hosts programs for everyone passionate about animation in all its forms, new audiences, young and old.
