‘Fist of the North Star’ animation director, Masami Suda, passes away at 77

Animation Industry lost an iconic legend Masami Suda, an anime director, animator and character designer who has numerous credits under his name like Fist of the North Star, Speed Racer and Slam Dunk and many more.

Suda passed away at 77, and the news of Suda’s passing away was revealed by Twitter user Olivier Fallaix who wrote “Host Masami Suda has passed away at the age of 77. His most notable work was the character design of Hokuto no Ken (Ken the Survivor). He has been to Cartoonist and Chibi Japan Expo several times in France. He was a member of the Japanese Animation Creators Association.”

Suda was born on 16 September 1943 in Saitama, Japan. He began his career working at Tatsunoko Productions in the 1960s, and he had also worked on multiple of Toei Animation’s series. He also worked on countless series including Dragon Ball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Lupin The 3rd, and Hellsing.

Suda’s final anime series that he contributed to was Fist of the Blue Sky, which was released in 2018.

Many prominent animators who previously worked under Suda including Hisashi Kagawa, Kenji Yokoyama came out to offer condolences after his death.
