‘Encanto’ led the box office with $27 million over the weekend

Encanto collected $27 million at the U.S. box office over the weekend and brings total U.S. box office collection of $40.3 million across the five-day holiday. However, the past Disney animated movies released over Thanksgiving had a super-doper opening— Coco launched at the same time of year and grossed $72 million and Ralph Breaks the Internet did as well and collected $84 million. Even though the opening collection is less but Encanto becomes the best box-office opener for an animated movie during the pandemic.

Disney feature film grossed $70 million worldwide and MGM’s House of Gucci debuted with $14.2 million over the three-day weekend and $21.8 million across five days. According to Comscore, Thanksgiving weekend often accounts for around $250 million in ticket sales domestically. Overall business this weekend came in at about $142 million.

Encanto story follows the magic of the Encanto that has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal—every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

The voice cast includes María Cecilia Botero, Wilmer Valderrama, Adassa, Diane Guerrero, Mauro Castillo, Angie Cepeda, Jessica Darrow, Rhenzy Feliz and Carolina Gaitan.

The film features all-new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton,Moana) and is directed by Byron Howard (Zootopia,Tangled) and Jared Bush (co-director Zootopia), co-directed by Charise Castro Smith (The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez) and produced by Clark Spencer and Yvett Merino. Bush and Castro Smith are screenwriters on the film.
