Film Review:
Jumbo triumphs over Akshay 26 December 2008 08:45 PM
By Sahirr Sethhi
The year 2008 has seen quite a few animation film releases, and it’s a pleasant way to end it with the release of Percept Picture Company’s Jumbo. The rise in the popularity of animation films is surely dissolving the cynicism of producers, who once believed that the Indian audience won’t devour animation. A belief that lead to an insecurity, so much so that even the release of Jumbo was accompanied by an aggressive publicity campaign, at the center of which was Bollywood‘s current heart-throb, Akshay Kumar. Ironically, all this does spark off a debate on whether animation content is attractive enough for the Indian audience or does it just needs to be packaged and sold in the right manner? Well... more on that later.
To cut it short without the spoilers, Jumbo brings to the big screen the story of a cute baby elephant, Jaiveer (aka Jumbo – Akshay Kumar) being brought up by his mother, Devi (Dimple Kapadia). Throughout his childhood Jumbo misses his father and questions Devi about his disappearance. He learns that his father was a great warrior, captured by the bad-evil humans, and not a coward as his friends suggested. Hence, with hope of rescuing his father, Jumbo sets off to look for him in the army camp of soldiers from Shouryagarh. This confrontation leads to him being chased out of the camp, almost losing his life. Injured and fatigued, Jumbo returns to find that his pack has moved on without him.

Then comes the chance meeting with Sonia (Lara Dutta), who takes him to a human-colony of mahavats who tend to him and change his perception about humans. Jumbo decides to stay back and train under them to grow up into a warrior, whilst his love for Sonia blossoms and so does his urge to be reunited with his parents. Soon after a war is waged against Shouryagarh where Jumbo joins the army. One thing leads to another and he learns more about his father, reunites with his mother and finds a cause to fight for.
The film uses a beautiful color-pallet of warm colors accompanied by wonderful character design. Each elephant has been given a distinct appearance and identity to differentiate them and seek the possibility of distinct stories in their realm. Even the humans have been modeled as caricatures, making them more inviting for the young audience. The war sequence in the end is simply breath-taking and one won‘t be surprised to witness a rather mute audience feasting their eyes to the visual splendor on screen.
The film is entirely in 3D and unlike the previous 3D film released this year - Roadside Romeo, it is laden with morals, which will turn out to be a kind value-education for the kids. It might come as a surprise but it’s true that Jumbo is in fact a dubbed version of the 2006 Thai film Khan Kluay, which was Thailand‘s first ever computer animated 3D film and it’s quality is spectacular. While here in India, even after the release of a number of animated features, we are still giving our animation industry brownie points for being in its nascence. Is one to conclude that Indian animators aren‘t capable of high quality work, or is it just the ‘chalta hai attitude’ of the producers which keeps the quality at bay. This film was also released in the US earlier this year as The Blue Elephant dubbed by Martin Short, Carl Reiner and Miranda Crosgrove. Hence, adapting the film or rather tweaking it to make it “acceptable” or rather “conducive” for the Indian audience required the addition of songs and some star voice-overs. As far as the songs are concerned there are a couple of catchy numbers like “Tu mera jumbo” and “Everything is gonna be all right” (composed by Ram Sampath) that go well with the flow of the film.
Now there is no problem with stars voice-overs for animated characters. But it definitely pinches when one sees the real hero of the film – Jumbo, peeking out from behind of the ‘Kinng‘ of Bollywood – Akshay Kumar on publicity posters. To make the film a tad more paisa-vasool, a song which I would rather call an item-number, was added right after the credits before the film even started. Now, it’s known that the producers would argue that it was just an alternate approach to the narrative of the film. But really whom are they kidding? Akshay‘s nasal voice didn‘t add much personality or life into Jumbo‘s character anyway. This, according to me, didn‘t do any justice to the film per se, but might have helped the producers rake in a few extra greens. No matter how big the film, the animators always are kept at bay in the background, well so much is the injustice that even while the credits roll in the end they share space with clips of Bollywood-stars inside the sound recording studios. Ironical, isn’t it?
Anyway the season demands spread of cheer, so what better way than watching a fun-filled animated feature. Round up the kids and family to hit the nearest screen to catch up with Jumbo, which proves to be a fresh and delightful watch.
