The magic of animation stems from the fact that it doesn‘t bind imagination by visual limitations. The art of animation gives one the chance of bringing out human characteristics in inanimate or non-human beings. Cheenti Cheenti Bang Bang‘s (C2B2) publicity displays a promise of taking the viewer into the life of an ant, but if the audience steps into the theatre with this naive expectation... they might be let down.
Initially, I was afraid that the film would be a result of the Antz and Bugs Life hangover, but was quite pleased that it wasn‘t so. The premise of the film displays immense potential. C2B2 is a story about two ant kingdoms, the black ants and the read ants. They live on either side of a pond and are at loggerheads all the time, but this time things go a bit too far and a small incident snowballs into a war. Each kingdom tries to outdo each other, all the while unaware of the fact that both of them are being manipulated by the same conspirator. In the backdrop of this war, the prince of the red ants falls in love with the princess of the black ants, a sub-plot of no consequence at all. The film could have been about human beings for all it is worth.
The makers of C2B2 have not been able to utilize animation as a medium to its fullest and have added too many elements that make the movie staple Bollywood fare. The film is not a visual spectacle; it depends too much on the dialogues and could have been a radio show without losing out on the story.
The dialogue is very well written and recorded. Though, there are a few lyrical rhyming tongue twisters which might not be understood by many kids. And to make things a little more uncomfortable, the same old complaints against Indian animation reprises when it comes to lip sync and choice of colour pallets. The film is not vibrant as seen in the posters, but rather dull as the colours used are on the darker side. Bright colours would certainly have added more cheer to the viewing experience.
If we can outsource spectacular content for the film industry award and enthrall audiences world over, it will surely do good for the Indian audiences if they are treated with quality entertainment too.
