The recent hack at Sony Pictures has revealed major details and one is about the Spiderman franchise. Sony and Marvel have had discussions about Sony allowing Marvel to produce a Spiderman trilogy.
An email that was picked up by the Wall Street Journal was a discussion between executives at Sony and the Walt Disney Company that features details about a possible Spider-Man-centric deal that was on the table. In an email from Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad to, Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chairman Amy Pascal, a “potential scenario” is introduced that would see Marvel producing a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies that would at the same time see Sony keep “creative control, marketing and distribution” for the films.
There were also talks from Marvel to Sony about introducing Spider-Man in the Captain America: Civil War. Talks between Marvel and Sony have apparently broken down, and the latter is planning to continue with its own Spider-Man slate. Insiders have told the Wall Street Journal that there are plans to have what is being called a “Spidey summit” next month that will see executives sitting down to really figure out what their current plans are for their big superhero franchise.
Among projects in development are an animated Spider-Man comedy that would be produced by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the team behind 22 Jump Street and The Lego Movie as well as previously disclosed Spider-Man spin-offs focused on villain team Sinister Six, super-foe Venom, and women from the webcrawler’s life.
Marvel as a studio is doing good films right now and with the second installment in the Amazing Spider-Man series not doing well at the box office, Sony really needs help with the superhero franchise.
