SJ Suryah working on a Tamil animation film on the lines of ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’

Well known film director, actor, screenwriter and producer of the Tamil cinema, SJ Suryah has ventured into a new format of movie production it seems.

According to fresh reports, Suryah will be making a live-action/computer-animated movie. Confirming the news to Times of India, he said that he is indeed working on an animation film with a unique concept and the pre-production itself will take a year.

“It’s too early to talk about it in detail, but all I can say is that the film will have animated characters in it along with human beings. It’s a different attempt. The cast to play the ‘human beings’ is yet to be decided,” he told TOI.

Speculation is that the film will be on the lines of the popular Alvin and the Chipmunks. Suryah will be directing the movie and also acting, but whether or not he will be composing the songs is not yet known.

SJ Suryah’s recent release Isai had a lot of visual effects in the movie and scored a box office of Rs 10 crore for a budget of Rs 5 crore. Some of the other films he is known for include Kushi(remade into Khushi in Hindi), New, Anbe Aaruyire,Nanban etc.

Animation is not an explored arena in the Kollywood industry and this attempt by Suryah will bring a lot of scope to the growth of animation not just in Tamil cinema but also in India.

The other notable animation movie in the Tamil industry was the 2014 movie Kochadaiyaan, a 3D motion-capture computer animated film starring superstar Rajinikanth which didn’t do very well at the box office.
