Lizard Squad plays Grinch this Christmas Season; Xbox Live and PSN down

Hackers Lizard Squad just ruined the Christmas for gamers. Both the Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network (PSN) have been experiencing issues since yesterday and the horror continues today too. The hackers who had hacked PSN back in August are claiming to have wrecked havoc on the online networks on both the console giants.

Both the console makers were expecting an array of online players on the big Christmas holiday and this has put their plans for a toss. Sony’s AskPlayStation Twitter account has acknowledged the service issue, but has not stated whether or not it’s the result of a DDoS attack. Xbox said it could not estimate when the service would return back to normal.

Lizard Squad issued a threat last week that it would take down the PlayStation and Xbox Live networks over Christmas. Another hacker gang, called “The Finest Squad,” had apparently exposed several Lizard Squad identities online, and it also learned that Lizard was taking the big game networks using DDoS attacks.

In August, the group took credit for a North-America-wide outage of the PlayStation Network and tweeted out bomb threats against an American Airlines flight that Sony executive John Smedley was aboard.

Lizard Squad has said that the networks have been recovered for many regions and should be back to full working condition by the end of day. For restoring the website, the hackers exchanged vouchers, where the deal was allegedly brokered by Kim Dotcom.

The Lizard Squad is now unpopular among the gaming community that is usually described as very vocal and energetic. Recent attacks have also put a question mark on the fact that despite several hacks on Sony and Microsoft’s networks, nothing has improved.
