Disney inks SE Asia SVOD deal with Globe Telecom

The multi-year agreement will see Globe offer Disney Movies on Demand service, providing subscribers with Disney and Pixar animations such as Toy Story, Finding Nemo, The Princess Diaries, Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmas, and Cinderella. In addition, the Disney on Demand service provides television hits such as Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Phineas & Ferb.

It also marks the first major deal in Southeast Asia under the Disney umbrella for short-form online subscription video network Maker Studios. Maker on Demand offers content across the genres of gaming, comedy, music, sports, fashion and family from a network of 55,000 creators.

Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia MD Rob Gilby commented: “With this unique collaboration, Disney fans in the Philippines will now be able to take their favourite stories and beloved characters everywhere they go across their choice of devices.”

The VOD deal also makes available the WATCH Disney Channel apps, providing cross platform access to Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD, as well as the mobile and web-based games, apps and e-books service Disney Interactive.

“We are very happy to enter into a relationship with such an iconic brand. Everyone loves Disney – that’s why we are excited to bring the brand closer to Filipinos and give the best content experience on their devices anytime, anywhere,” said Globe Telecom, senior advisor for consumer business, Dan Horan.

“We know that our customers are equally excited to get into the wide portfolio of Disney content such as movies, TV shows, games, merchandising, theatrical releases, and interactive videos available across our mobile and broadband services,” he added.

The deal follows tie-ups between Globe and Facebook, Google, Viber, Spotify, NBA, Hooq and, most recently, WhatsApp. In 2014, Globe’s mobile browsing and other data revenues reached P14.3 billion (US$320.86 million), up 23 per cent from P11.6 billion in the previous year, and representing a 64 per cent share of the Philippines data market in terms of revenue.

The Globe network also carried significantly higher data traffic at 87,000 terabytes of data, increasing 270 per cent from the previous year due to a significant surge in mobile browsing activity and higher smartphone adoption among its customers.
