Toho and Gkids unveil new trailer for ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’

Toho is a major Japanese entertainment company, while Gkids is an acclaimed North American animation distributor and a wholly owned subsidiary of Toho, have unleashed a new trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero.

The highly anticipated sequel from director Takashi Yamazaki. The film will make its world premiere as the Spotlight Gala selection at the 64th New York Film Festival on Saturday, 26 September, before opening theatrically in Japan on Tuesday, 3 November, and rolling out across North America from Friday, 6 November.

The new trailer wastes little time turning up the heat, confirming that Godzilla was not fully destroyed and offering a first look at the latest kaiju extermination operation. It also introduces new and returning characters, accompanied by a new theatrical poster featuring Godzilla surrounded by mysterious blue energy as bright gold lightning strikes from above.

The trailer also reveals Masami Nagasawa as Makoto Aoyama, a genius weather forecaster assigned to the Disaster Response Bureau. Jun Kunimura joins as Dr. Ogata, while Ko Maehara plays Akira Hagiwara, assistant to professor Murakami, played by Min Tanaka. Motosuke Iida also returns as the Toyo Balloon section chief Akio Itagaki, who played a key role in the Godzilla extermination operation in Godzilla Minus One. Kenji Misuhashi, Eita Okuno and Kai Inowaki round out the latest cast additions, joining the previously announced returning and new faces.

Following the success of Toho’s 2023 hit Godzilla Minus One, which earned an Academy Award for its visual effects, Yamazaki returns with a sequel that picks up in 1949, two years after the events of the previous film. The story continues with the Shikishima family as post-war Japan faces another devastating calamity. The sequel promises bigger effects choreography and heightened terror while keeping its post- World War II setting firmly grounded in the human experience.

Shot entirely in Japan, Godzilla Minus Zero is the first Japanese production to be filmed for Imax. The film was captured using high-definition digital cameras certified by Imax and optimised in sound and imagery for Imax screens, giving the iconic kaiju a bigger stage on which to wreak havoc.

The film’s story begins two years after war reduced Japan to zero and Godzilla plunged it into minus. As the country struggles to recover and reclaim a sense of normality, a new threat strikes, crushing that hard-won peace in an instant. With humanity once again staring down the monster, the message is ominously clear: there is no third time. Everything ends here.

With Yamazaki back at the helm, a new wave of characters, larger-scale destruction and Godzilla once again looming over post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus Zero is gearing up to make its return a suitably monstrous cinematic event.
