‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ shines at the box office with a smashing $290.5 million opening weekend worldwide

As we said in our review of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, ‘The Force is strong and it’s here to stay’, the movie’s box office performance over the opening weekend has left very little scepticism as it smashed records.

It was still quite a bit far from the achievements of its immediate predecessor, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story bagged in $155 million in revenues over its opening weekend in the USA, making it the second highest grossing December opening for a movie in the states, lagging behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens which garnered a whopping $248 million.

Rogue One
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story raked $290.5 million worldwide in its opening weekend, excluding China and South Korea.

The movie also takes up the spot in being the third highest-grossing opening weekend for a movie in 2016, behind Captain America: Civil War ($179 million) and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million). It is also the 12th highest-grossing opening weekend ever.

To achieve the same feat as The Force Awakens would be a bit too hard for Rogue One but the initial collections do point towards more promising weeks to come. Rogue One was an experiment of sorts for the franchisee and its performance would likely decide the future possibilities for other spin-offs, like the solo Han Solo movie or a Boba Fett film.
