PS5 gets a pixel punch with an AI-powered technology: QSSR

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI-powered upscaling technology designed to bring some of the image-quality gains of the PS5 Pro to the standard PS5.

The new technology builds on PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which uses AI to analyse game images pixel by pixel and upscale them with greater detail and stability. Until now, the computational demands of PSSR meant that bringing similar technology to the PS5 was off the table.

Sucker Punch Productions lead rendering engineer Jasmin Patry shared, “At Sucker Punch, we’re excited to bring QSSR to Ghost of Yōtei players so that they can experience the world we’ve created with even more clarity and detail. QSSR excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the PS5 console until now.”

Born from Project Amethyst, an official graphics-technology collaboration between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), the new technology combines a streamlined neural network architecture with a hand-tuned implementation designed to squeeze more performance out of the PS5.

The first games to get the QSSR treatment are Marvel’s Wolverine, a 2026 action-adventure video game for the PS5 and Ghost of Yōtei, a 2025 third-person action-adventure video game for the PlayStation. Both titles are being patched with QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.

Insomniac Games head of technology Mike Fitzgerald stated, “Our team at Insomniac works hard to make sure each of our games is a showcase of PlayStation hardware, and we’re excited for Marvel’s Wolverine to be one of the first titles to bring this new QSSR technology to players. Personally, I love seeing how the PlayStation tech teams continually improve the PS5 platform, and I’m excited for more games to make use of QSSR in the future!”
