Marvel’s Kevin Feige responds to Spielberg and Synder’s remarks on Marvel’s superheroes

The comic- superhero genre lately has been hogging much of Hollywood’s limelight and considering the billions this genre has been churning in for either Disney’s Marvel or Warner Bros. studios, this is no surprise.

Recently legendary sci-fi director, Steven Spielberg shared his views on the latest super-hero fad commenting that we all witnessed how the Western culture died out on cinema and that there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the western too.  The veteran Jurassic Park director surely shared his thought predicting the end of the superhero genre but Marvel President, Kevin Feige whose brain-child, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has churned out nearly $9 billion across 12 big-budget releases, took things way too positively.

In a recent interview reported at IGN Feige responded to Spielberg’s predictions, commenting that, “Western lasted 40-50 years, and they still pop up occasionally. It’s been, what, eight years since Iron Man 1 if we count that, which I do, as the beginning of our MCU? Maybe (the superhero genre) will only last another 42 years.”

While Marvel has been cashing in on their established MCU, the comic rival Warner Bros.’ DC Comics is hot on the heels to capture more screen space with its own line-up of movies leading to a DC Cinematic Universe. While promoting the upcoming movie, Batman v Superman – Dawn of Justice, the 300 director also helming the movie responded to Spielberg’s comments by taking a dig at Marvel stating that, “Batman and Superman are transcendent of superhero movies in a way, because they’re Batman and Superman. They’re not just, like, the flavor of the week Ant-Man, not to be mean, but whatever it is. What is the next Blank-Man?”

Defending the Marvel characters, Feige responded that hose are all very different movies. They all happen to be based on Marvel characters and Marvel comics, but from a genre and a cinematic perspective, they’re all very unique. Civil War may as well be a different genre from Age of Ultron.”

While the heat between Marvel and DC is blazing up with 7 superhero movies slated for 2016 with most hyped from both Marvel and DC being Marvel’s Captain America – The Civil War releasing on 5 May, 2016 and DC’s Batman v Superman – Dawn of Justice releases on 23 March, 2016.
