The PS5 Pro is proving hard to score in Japan, so Sony is turning the scramble into a lottery.
Sony, a Japanese multinational conglomerate and global leader in consumer electronics, video games, and entertainment, has opened applications for the purchase of PS5 Pro, an upgraded, high-performance mid-generation version of Sony’s PS5 video game console, units in Japan, with a lottery system set to kick in if demand outstrips supply. The move comes as scalpers continue to make life difficult for genuine buyers chasing high-demand hardware.
Under the new system, eligible customers must first submit an application. If applications exceed the number of available units, Sony Interactive Entertainment will conduct a lottery to decide who gets a shot at purchasing the console.
The eligibility bar is fairly specific. Applicants must have a PlayStation online services account registered in Japan and must have logged at least 60 hours of gameplay on PS5, PS4 or both between 27 September 2024 and 27 September 2026 at 11:59 pm. There is another account check, too.
The system is designed to put a few more hurdles between PS5 Pro stock and scalpers, while giving genuine players a fairer crack at getting their hands on the console.
For Japanese gamers, the hunt for a PS5 Pro has gone from checkout rush to lottery luck. Game on.
