Growth of digital sales for video games slows down by 5 per cent in September: Superdata

After a pretty good performance during the summer with double digit growth in digital revenues, it seems that the video game market has slowed down a bit in September. Research firm SuperData recently released their monthly, worldwide digital revenue report which testifies that September managed to garner around $6.2 billion for the month, which has increased by 5 per cent year-over-year.

It can be traced somewhat to console sales where people bought 14 per cent  less digital copies on consoles like PlayStation and Xbox One. Thus the revenue dropped to $493 million in comparison to $572.8 million in September 2015.

However, top console games managed to bag a good amount this time. Activision Blizzard’s first person shooter (FPS), Destiny managed to multiply its revenue by eight times in September in comparison to what it had in August 2016, all thanks to the expansion, ‘Rise of Iron’, says SuperData. The figures of Destiny went from $7.2 million in August to $59.1 million in September.

“Over the past few years, AAA console publishers have become increasingly dependent on additional content releases to extend the lifecycle for major titles,” says SuperData . “Activision Blizzard has had the greatest success perfecting this formula with heavyweight franchise Call of Duty. Since April 2016, Call of Duty: Black Ops’s additional content revenue has never dipped below 80 per cent of total revenue.”

Here is the list of top grossing games according to the SuperData report:
