‘Dangal’ trailer tells the inspiring tale of the success of female wrestling in India

Inspiration, motivation and sports fever gear up your spirit once you watch the new Dangal trailer. Wrestling is one of India’s famous traditional sport which has a deep rooted connection and immediately strikes the cultural chord in every Indian soul. And when this cultural spirit is coupled with a striking social element of women empowerment then surely there is going to be a colossal Dangal (wrestling).

The trailer features Aamir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat, the Indian Amateur wrestler, who aims to win the gold medal for India through the medium of his children. To his disappointment, his wife Shobha Kaur played by Sakshi Tanwar gives birth to a fourth girl child.

But, some dreams are not crushed easily, some souls do not settle for mediocrity. When everything seems lost, there is a spark which is generally unseen or unnoticed. Phogat finds this spark in his daughters Geeta Phogat played by Fatima Sana Shaikh and Babita Kumari played by Sanya Malhotra.

When a desire for something great is tapped, it should be cherished, nourished and nurtured for it to grow into a fulfilling achievement. Phogat does the same as he trains his daughters thus rising above the cultural barriers of female inferiority in a rural environment.

The rest is history as we know Geeta Phogat is India’s first ever gold medalist in women’s wrestling in the 55 kg freestyle category of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She is also the first-ever Indian woman wrestler to have qualified for the Olympics. Her sister Babita Kumari, also an Indian female wrestler, won a silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

What drives us in the trailer is the passion for the sport, the spirit of winning, Phogat’s struggle to fulfill his dream and stunning effort of the girls to reach the top and make a name for themselves. The visuals look quite appealing with a specific rural colour pattern set for the freestyle wrestling in villages. Crowd multiplication, background creation and other additions seem to fall under the visual effects work for this project. Alos, Aamir is seen in a younger version in a particular sequence. VFX veteran Prasad Sutar of NY VFXWAALA studio is the VFX supervisor for this film.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film is produced by Aamir Khan Productions along with Disney and UTV Motion Pictures. Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao and Siddharth Roy Kapur have served as producers for the film. Dangal is set for a Christmas release on 23 December, 2016.
