White House faces fan backlash over ‘One Piece’ AI image

The White House has charted unexpected waters on social media, drawing sharp criticism from anime fans after sharing an AI-generated image depicting president Donald Trump and key administration figures as characters from Eiichiro Oda’s record-breaking manga and anime series One Piece.

The post showed Trump alongside vice president JD Vance, treasury secretary Scott Bessent, defense secretary Pete Hegseth, and secretary of state Marco Rubio aboard the Going Merry. The ship, the iconic first vessel of Monkey D. Luffy’s Straw Hat Pirates, was modified with a Maga hat resting atop its signature sheep figurehead and the Straw Hat Jolly Roger emblazoned across its main mast.

Accompanied by the caption, The Mark of a Good Crew, the image was meant as a lighthearted display of administration solidarity. Instead, it ignited a fiery debate across online fan communities.

Critics and anime enthusiasts immediately pointed out the glaring ideological disconnect between the administration’s platform and the core themes of One Piece. The long-running series centers on a crew of anti-authoritarian rebels fighting against an oppressive, centralised world government that enforces draconian laws, maintains absolute control, and silences dissent. Fans voiced frustration that a story celebrating liberation, borderless freedom, and standing up against tyrannical rulers was being co-opted for political messaging.

This isn’t the first time administration officials have embraced viral AI imagery. Previous digital edits featuring Trump in various pop culture roles have circulated widely, though few have drawn such specific pushback from dedicated fandoms.

Whether the White House intended a deep homage or simply seized on a trending pop-culture motif, the post demonstrates that mixing high-stakes politics with beloved anime lore can quickly capsize social media strategy.
