Greta Gerwig (Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’s writer and director) is ready to sprinkle some cosmic magic on Narnia, with a lion, a pegasus and the birth of a fantastical world leading the charge in her upcoming adventure.
The filmmaker, known for Barbie and Little Women, is bringing C. S. Lewis’s 1955 novel The Magician’s Nephew to the screen for the first time. The film will take audiences back to the origins of Narnia, long before a certain wardrobe opened the door to the enchanted realm.
Written and directed by Gerwig, the movie stars newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell alongside Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma round out the cast.
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew director Gerwig shared, “I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life. I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honour of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being. Because of C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me. It transformed me.”
The newly unveiled trailer teases a world of cosmic wonders, mystical landscapes and fantastical adventures. At its heart lies the creation of Narnia, brought to life through the extraordinary power of a cosmic lion whose song gives the world its spark.
The film is set to make a grand entrance in Imax and cinemas worldwide on 12 February 2027, with exclusive Imax previews beginning on 10 February. Netflix will welcome the fantasy epic to its platform on 2 April 2027.
