The long-awaited Red River anime adaptation will continue with a second cour from 29 September, bringing the series to a total of 24 episodes. Crunchyroll is streaming the classic Shojo adaptation as it airs.
Fans of Chie Shinohara’s Red River manga have waited more than 30 years for an anime adaptation. The series will now continue its story with a second cour beginning on 29 September.
Crunchyroll is streaming Red River simultaneously with its ongoing broadcast.
The manga was originally serialised in Shogakukan’s Shojo Comic magazine from January 1995 to June 2002. Its chapters were collected into 28 tankobon volumes, with the series reported to have more than 20 million copies in circulation in 2019.
The latest announcement adds Soma Saito and Shun Horie to the cast. Saito will voice User Rames, while Horie will portray Juda Haspasrupi from episode eight.
The story follows Yuri, a modern Japanese teenager who is mysteriously pulled beneath a puddle and transported to the Hittite Empire in the 14th century BCE.
After arriving in the ancient world, Yuri becomes caught in a dangerous struggle for the throne. She joins Prince Kali, helping him battle assassins and navigate royal conspiracies while surviving a world at war.
As Yuri’s actions earn her a reputation as the goddess Ishtar, she is forced to confront a difficult choice between returning to her life and embracing an uncertain future.
With its second cour now confirmed, Red River will continue to bring Shinohara’s long-running shojo story to a new generation of anime viewers.
