Love, lies and lethal obsession are about to light up the small screen. Firefly Wedding, the upcoming Meiji-era romantic thriller anime, has dropped a new teaser trailer while locking in its Japanese premiere date for 9 October on Fuji TV.
Based on Oreco Tachibana’s hit manga, which has sold more than four and a half million copies and clinched the Electronic Comic Award 2024, the series is shaping up to be one of autumn’s most combustible romances. Think aristocratic duty meets assassin-fuelled passion, with plenty of sparks flying in between.
The latest update also expands the cast roster. Kento Ito, known for voicing Aqua in (Oshi no Ko), joins as Kotaro Ogawa, the loyal guardian of noblewoman Satoko Kirigaya. Meanwhile, Kenjiro Tsuda, the unmistakable voice behind Nanami in Jujutsu Kaisen, steps in as Mitsueda.
They join an already formidable line-up led by Lynn as Kirigaya and Koki Uchiyama as Shinpei Goto, the hitman whose heart proves far more dangerous than his blade.
The story follows Kirigaya, the daughter of a count who appears to have everything status, beauty and privilege except time. Believed to have only a short life ahead of her, she dreams of securing a prestigious marriage and earning her father’s approval. But fate has other plans. After being kidnapped, she strikes a desperate bargain with Shinpei, a deadly assassin caught in the chaos. Her proposal to get married sets off a chain reaction of obsession, loyalty and forbidden romance that neither can escape.
Behind the scenes, Takahiro Kamei directs the series, while Yuko Kakihara handles series composition and screenplay duties. Character designs come from Yukiko Aikei, music is composed by Nogrid and animation production is handled by David production, the studio behind JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Cells at Work!.
With a noblewoman on borrowed time and an assassin willing to burn the world for love, Firefly Wedding is not exactly your typical fairy-tale romance. When the fireflies begin to glow this October, expect hearts to flutter and danger to strike.
