R&H‘ Bill Westenhofer wins Best Visual Effects Oscar for The Golden Compass 25 February 2008 07:50 PM

It‘s celebration time at Rhythm & Hues across its three facilities in LA, Mumbai and Hyderabad its work on The Golden Compass is the 2007 winner for the Best Visual Effects Oscar at the 80th Academy Awards. Rhythm & Hues’ Visual Effects Supervisor Bill Westenhofer was one of four recipients to receive the Oscar, along with fellow Compass supervisors Michael Fink, Ben Morris and Trevor Wood.
It’s raining awards for the studio, its most recent award being the BAFTA which it won a couple of weeks ago for the same movie. The recognition marks the second Oscar for best visual effects for the company, the first being in 1995 for the classic movie, Babe. From the Indian CG artist perspective however, it was a particularly proud moment as this is a historic first for our country with the Indian artists and the Indian facility contributing in good measure.

Westenhofer led a crew of 500 in both USA and India over a period of 18 months to produce over 400 shots featured in the movie. Rhythm & Hues’ work includes creation of the hero daemons, including Dakota Blue Richard‘s daemon Pan in all his incarnations; the Golden Monkey (Nicole Kidman’s daemon); Stelmaria, (Daniel Craig’s daemon), along with the spyflies and numerous other characters. Rhythm & Hues India contributed to all stages of the production process and delivered roughly 1/3rd of the total work done by R&H.
