UK based charity, the Adivasi Arts Trust, is coordinating an Animation Workshop in Gangtok, Sikkim from 22 February - 16 March 2010 to explore ways of adapting the rich indigenous storytelling tradition to the new digital medium of animation films.
Although Sikkim has a highly developed culture of storytelling, these tales still remain remote and inaccessible to the world outside the state. A small team will be traveling to Sikkim to meet storytellers and record some of these magical tales. Tara Douglas, the Secretary of the Adivasi Arts Trust is a British animator based in India. Tara has been working with indigenous Indian artists for several years now. “This interest in preserving tribal art and culture through animation began in 2003”, she explains.

“At the time I was associated with a small animation company based in Scotland, called West Highland Animation. Having relied on Scottish folklore as content for animation, West Highland Animation was interested in exploring other minority cultures. We collaborated with groups of indigenous artists from Central India to make “The Tallest Story Competition”, a collection of five short tribal animation films. The films were so well received at screenings in India and in the United Kingdom, and children are now demanding to see more. During this three week animation workshop in Sikkim we want to make connections with young people in the state and involve them in developing a short animation film from one of the best folk tales”.
The team for the workshop includes two Indian animators; one of them is from Sikkim. Palzor Bhutia, who studied animation at the National Institute of Design, always wanted to make a cartoon film from his own tradition but the lack of support for cultural animation projects in India was prohibitive. Knowing of Palzor’s ambition, Tara decided to apply for support for an Animation Workshop in Sikkim from the Commonwealth Foundation and Intach (UK).
The workshop will be running from 22 February- 16 March 2010. It is hoped that many young people will use this opportunity to discover how animation can be used to preserve ancient traditions and make them appealing to a young generation increasingly interested in multimedia and computer games. “If young people feel that their traditions are getting outdated then why not look at new ways of making them more accessible? We have also invited six young thangka painters from Gangtok to join the workshop as we would like the artwork for the film to have an indigenous style. We are also hoping that musicians from Sikkim will get interested and compose a soundtrack for the short film.”
Encouraged by the popularity of “The Tallest Story Competition” the Adivasi Arts Trust is now working to produce a new collection of Indian indigenous animation films called “Tales of the Tribes”. “In the first series, logistics prevented us from including any stories from the North East. This time we would like to”, explains Tara. Other stories that are in development are folk tales from Nagaland and Manipur.
“We have done several projects with Pardhan Gond artists from Madhya Pradesh. Because they received the right encouragement in the 1980s, the Gonds now have a highly develop a style of art that is well suited for animation. It would be good if other indigenous communities were able to realize this potential. Because animation is such hard work it has to be planned out meticulously before starting on the animation production. We will be in the preproduction phase of film-making during the workshop. It is hoped that further support will be found from the public and private sectors in Sikkim to complete the short film. Himalayan culture generates a lot of interest abroad”, explained Tara. “We already have offers for screenings when the film is finished.”
