redchillies.vfx to take Indian VFX to the next level with Superhero film ‘Ra-One‘ 30 January 2010 11:55 AM
The team at redchillies.vfx is completely charged and is working full steam on what is touted to be the most VFX intensive film ever made in India. Red Chillies Entertainment’s ‘Ra-One’ directed by Anubhav Sinha starring Shah Rukh Khan boasts of FX work never executed in India for an Indian feature. The company has already brought some big names from Hollywood on board and is in the process of getting some more for this project.
AnimationXpress.com’s Chaitra Shetty caught up with redchillies.vfx COO, Keitan Yadav and Production Director, Haresh Hingorani to know more about ‘Ra-One’
What is ‘Ra-One’ all about? Keitan Yadav - ‘Ra-One’ is a typical Superhero film, which is futuristic and fast paced. It is a live action sci-fi film with lots of action, fights, stunts, comedy and a lot more. There will be superpowers in play and VFX has a pivotal role in taking the entire film forward. Shah Rukh Khan of course is playing the superhero and the story is of a superhero pitted against a super villain. Going with the VFX scope of ‘Ra- One’, it is one of the biggest VFX films India would have attempted.
The reason for opening a VFX facility for Shah Rukh Khan was always that, deep within he wanted to do a VFX based film. A genre which three and half years back was not mainstream cinema. This genre has been attempted genuinely by many in India but hasn’t worked for many reasons including the fact that we cannot expect to zap people with just VFX alone & Hollywood keeps on raising the bar with movies like Matrix, Lord of the Rings & Avatar. One other reason to attempt a film like this is that Mr. Shah Rukh Khan believes that if he himself along with one of the premium production houses in the country i.e. Red Chillies Entertainments, & rechillies.vfx as a premium VFX facility cannot pull it off, then this genre would be dead in India, nobody would touch it. If you see the history we are working against the tide with ‘Ra-One’, if it becomes a success it will be the first of its kind & would open doors to this genre of films in India.

What is the scope of VFX in the film? Keitan Yadav - The film will have Shah Rukh Khan doing action never done by him before, styles of fighting and styles of choreographic moves never seen before, we are going to use technology which the Hollywood has used in the past but we have not used here. Technically it will have a lot of stuff like 3D scanning, motion capture, motion control, miniature shoots, tons of green screen work, set extensions, explosions, futuristic weaponry, matte painting, some very high-end 3D work, very complex particle system, computer generated characters, cars, buildings, environments, etc... In short it has everything a VFX studio could dream of doing. The film will have stunts and sequences that you have so far seen only in Hollywood films. These highly choreographed action and stunt sequences are something that the audiences have seen Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Cruise and the likes doing but not their own Shah Rukh Khan.
Haresh Hingorani - We are planning to hire VFX technicians from Hollywood who have worked on some of the topnotch films there. The whole idea is that this time we have the budget & the time and we can go ahead & work with these people and get our team trained. The whole idea is to learn from them, as we have not worked on these types of movies till now. The only way we can do it is to collaborate with International technicians & learn their way by working along side. At the artist level if the talent is Indian, we would be really happy, if not we are ready to go international, get the international talent here, get our guys trained, take them to a level higher, so that the level of VFX goes a notch higher in India.
What stage is the project in right now? Keitan Yadav - We have already started pre production on the film. As the film is going to be shot abroad as well as in India, the dates have not been finalized yet but its going to be a late 2010 or early 2011 release. As far as the involvement of the VFX department goes we have started with the storyboards, the pre-visualization and have finished our technical meetings with the foreign crew, which were flown in from LA.
Haresh Hingorani – We have already started doing the shot break down and planning the execution of the same. Since redchillies.vfx is the in-house facility of Red Chillies Entertainments, we are going to storyboard and previz all the VFX sequences so that everybody is clear. We have given priority to the VFX Sequences and the complete schedule might last from 9 months to a year. Currently 30% of the team at redchillies.vfx is working on pre production of “Ra-One” while the rest is working on “My Name is Khan”, once that is released we are going to completely concentrate on ‘Ra-One’. Most probably we would not be taking up any other projects till Ra-One is delivered.

What are the various capacities across which you are hiring? Keitan Yadav - First and foremost we are looking for talented people from within the country in high end 3D, talented compositors, specialists in Nuke. Post My Name is Khan, we are going to train our entire crew so that they are ready to face this new level of complexity. Like Shah Rukh is always pro India, we would be glad, if we can source it from inside. But if they are not available, we have no option but to go International. By doing that we are giving our guys a chance to understand, absorb and learn their traits, techniques and ways and get their knowledge base higher. Even if that happens, it will help the industry in many ways.
We will be shifting to the new building soon and will be doubling our manpower set up from 100+ to 200+ artists. Whoever would be working with redchillies.vfx be it 3D artists, compositors, production heads, team leads, etc, they all will be exposed to a project of an International quality & talent and this will initiate a lot of changes in the way we work.
Haresh Hingorani - Why to outsource when you can bring them here and learn their ways. They have been exposed to this kind of work and we have not. If we look at the gap we can say we have been in this industry for 8 years when they have been doing it for the last 25 years.
We have three VFX Supervisors here in redchillies.vfx including Arjun, Keitan and myself, but we are still open to getting VFX technicians who have done VFX intensive films in Hollywood, just to understand the way they work and learn & produce the same quality of work on our own.
Since you have started with the pre viz, what are the production challenges that you can foresee? Keitan Yadav - The challenges are immense. First time working with a foreign crew at this level with the scope of vfx work we have. Every shot is a challenge as we are working on such complex sequences for the first time. All I can say is, it’s going to be at a scale never witnessed before in Indian cinema.
Haresh Hingorani - We have acquired a lot of software and hardware. We are one of the first studios in India to utilize Houdini. In fact Side Effects has featured us on their site for the fluid simulation that we did for “De Dana Dan”. The way its growing it is one of the fastest growing software as far as 3D is concerned, as it is a node based software which brings in a lot of flexibility. All we can say is we are going to use each and every tool in the book. We need all the experience & talent and utilize everything we have for this project.
