VCL-Tata Elxsi Ltd. sweeps National Awards in both Animation & VFX category 28 January 2010 11:30 AM

Visual Computing Labs (VCL) Tata Elxsi Ltd. has bagged a double whammy at the 56th National Film Awards and reinforced its position as one of the names to reckon with not only for animation but VFX as well in India. The studio has been conferred with ‘Best Animation‘ Award for Roadside Romeo, one of the most anticipated animation releases in India for 2008, along with sweeping the VFX category by bagging the ‘Best Special Effects‘ Award for ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’.
‘Roadside Romeo’ which marked the collaboration of global entertainment giant Walt Disney with Bollywood hotshot Yashraj Films to co produce the first ever mainstream 3D animation film which was to be made in India for Indian audiences, saw its brilliant execution at the hands of VCL. The movie served as first for many animation practices in India and the quality of CG and animation delivered for the same, took the quality benchmarks of the Indian animation space multiple notches higher.

On the other hand ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ produced by UTV motion pictures is a critically acclaimed 2008 release based on the Mumbai train blasts of July 11, 2006 wherein VCL recreated the blast in CG bringing out the severity of the incident.
Speaking to AnimationXpress.com about this dual honor Pankaj Khandpur, Creative Director, VCL shared, "Winning the National Award in both the categories of Animation and Special Effects is a validation and indication of our original vision. We always wanted to do both the things and we have been successful in doing it. This is a proud moment for us as these mark our 2nd and 3rd National Awards, we have earlier won it for VFX of Tamil movie ‘Anniyan‘. With this Award new grounds for Indian Animation have been established as it is a recognition of the genre at a national level. This should embolden other people into taking up this medium. And hopefully in time it will transcend to the Box Office results as well."

‘Roadside Romeo’ a 95-minute feature had around 1,500 shots with 37 scenes, out of which five were beautiful songs choreographed in complete Bollywood style. The film had a massive number of characters with detailed textures and fur which made the film one of the most render intensive projects the studio had done till date. Along with production one of the things that the studio hugely invested in for the project was the pre production.

VCL Animation Director, Shrirang Sathaye shares, "It was the first time in my career that we got to work on the entire pre-production for a feature length film.I have worked on a lot of TVCs and a few short length films where the pre-prod was really done with a quick turn-around time.Roadside Romeo was a film where we really took our time designing characters,sets and situations with some amazing inputs from Jugal and Adi and sometimes even Uday. The best part is the way the entire 2D pre-production translated in the 3D space.It was simply mind blowing!Getting the fur right on the characters was one of the many nightmares that we went through but at the end everything fell in place.Obviously all this would not have been possible without the help of the brilliant technical team that we have at VCL."

Starring R. Madhavan, Soha Ali Khan, Irfan Khan, Paresh Rawal and Kay Kay Menon ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ involved multi layer compositing with live action and CG layers of explosion, debris and falling people. Govardhan Vigraham the VFX Supervisor of the project shares, “The most challenging part of the VFX work in the film was creating the train explosion sequence as it was the core of the story and had to be realistic and natural looking. The sequence comprised of seven to eight shots, depicting the sequence of events following the explosion. First there is explosion in the train, then you see the smoke coming out, then there is debris falling and lastly you see a person being thrown out of the train on to the railway tracks due to the impact of the explosion. Also this person is run over by a train coming on the parallel track, even that was difficult to create.”
He further adds, “Winning a National Award for the film feels is very exciting. The fact that the work has been recognized and that too at a National Award level is very satisfying. I am very thankful that I got an opportunity to work on an intense film like this and winning an award for the same comes as an icing on the cake.” Earlier part of Tata Elxsi Govardhan now works as an independent VFX Supervisor and is currently working on Vishal Bhardwaj‘s ‘Ek Bataa Saat’.
