EyeQube brings back historical war field for ‘Veer‘ 25 January 2010 06:55 PM

Mumbai based VFX studio EyeQube has brought back the war field with a massive number of 833 VFX shots for the historical war movie ‘Veer‘ that released today. Set in the 19th Century (1860A.D. to 1920 A.D) about the Pindharis who were betrayed by the King of Madhavgarh and the British, the movie stars Salman Khan as Veer the main protagonist in the film with Mithun Chakravorthy as his father, Zarine Khan as the Princess of Madhavgarh and Jackie Shroff as the King of Madhavgarh.
A huge team of about 120 artists were involved right from the time the final script was ready under Creative Director Charles Darby, Executive Producer Vamsi Ayyagari, and VFX Supervisors B. Sasikumar and Sachin Bole. The work in the movie involved artists from various departments such as modeling, lighting, texturing, rigging, animation, digital envorinments, effects, match moving, matte painting and compositing.

Speaking to Animationxpress.com EyeQube Creative Director Charles Darby said "The VFX work started after the first schedule onwards as there were complicated shots to be done and for that we had to collect a lot of reference material, design concepts, make animatics etc to make the shots look grand and visually very spectacular. The entire VFX were done sequence wise after we received the final edit of the sequence."
EyeQube VFX Supervisor for the project Sachin Bole said "The director, Anil Sharma wanted a very grand look for this film. He was clear in what he wanted and gave us a lot of support for the execution of VFX in the film. He gave us the complete script of the film, along with the scene details and also the storyboards for certain sequences. Eyeqube sent a shoot supervisor on every VFX shoot to guide the director to take a particular VFX shot. We supervised all shooting schedules involving VFX which were held in Mumbai, Rajasthan, Pune and Khandala."

Some of the interesting and challenging sequence in the movie that were delivered by EyeQube include the London tower bridge shot where in the entire London city along with the construction of the Tower Bridge were created completely in CG. The armies charging in the first war scene and a sequence where in the army enters the fort were all done in CG. Another interesting scene in the sequence where in Salman Khan falls from the horse in the train robbery sequence was a complete CG shot having a digital double of Salman. "The biggest challenge was to create London city and the Tower Bridge being shown under construction. It was one of the biggest shots we have ever delivered. It involved a lot of research and concept work and above all it had to look believable. After a lot of hard work we finally succeeded" added Sasikumar.
Speaking further Sachin said, "The basic requirement of the film was that it had to look grand and lavish on the lines of Gladiator and Troy. For that we needed a lot of cg horses, people and locations. All these were created by us in VFX using cg elements, digital matte painting, digital environments and compositing."
