BY RAOUL LOBO
Shelley page, DreamWorks Head of International Outreach
MAAC in a bid to give their students exposure to the India’s top studios and prepare them to join the industry themselves has organized the ongoing National Students Meet at Mumbai which began on 18th Jan and will go on till 23rd Jan. With students coming from all over the country to attend the event, NSM has more than 300 students attending.
The speakers on the 2nd day included DreamWorks Head of International Outreach Shelley Page on design in Animation, Namita Gotephode of Rhythm and Hues Studios showcasing the studio’s recent projects, Vamsi Ayyagiri of EyeQube with the case study of the VFX work done on Aladin , Samir Hoon VFX President Prana Studios spoke about his journey as a visual effects artist and the industry in India followed by the team from Prana including R&D lead Vijay Anand, Cloth Hair Fur lead Naveen Kumar, Foilage Lead Clinton Remedios and Rigging Lead Shreepad Agaskar, each giving insights in to their respective work.
Speaking to AnimationXpress.com MAAC Industry Relations Vice President Gaurav Markan shared,” Today started off strong after the team building yesterday. It is very exciting; the perspectives speakers are giving with regard to portfolio development and more.“

Shelley Page conducted an interesting session on Design in Animation where she showcased work from around the world, including DreamWorks’s own work to independent student films from around the world all of which were exceptional. The amazing short films shown included ‘The Little Boy and the Beast‘ from Studio Soi, ‘Pandore and Inka Bola’ from Les Gobelins, ‘Anchored’ from Ringling School of Art and the series of animated shorts by Alexey Aleexev bought by Nickelodeon ‘Log Jam’.
Namita Gotephode, Assistant Manager, Rhythm and Huese
She spoke about the work done for Kung Fu Panda showing amazing work that didn’t make it to the film. She gave interesting details like the problem of the scale of the characters in Monsters versus Aliens with the enormous insectosaurus and ginormica having to share frames with the rest of the characters, and how Dustin Hoffman’s expressions helped in creating Shifu (the character he voiced for) emphasizing that recording people is helpful for animation.
She explained how the characters are created, by showcasing multiple versions of the protagonist character Haddock in the upcoming film ‘How to Train your Dragon’ as well the character tests for dragons, along with the earlier story board edits of the trailer, she then showed the finished trailer to which the audience cheered. Shelley said that students films tend to benefit from more editing in spite of the students hard work, and emphasized the importance of editing to retain the film’s dynamic especially for action and comedy.

Speaking about NSM Shelley said,” Sometimes people are not very organized, but here the event is well organized and the students are responding well. I appreciate the opportunity MAAC has given me. Being on the advisory board about curriculum it has been very interesting thinking about the future requirements of the curriculum.”
Namita Gotephode, assistant manager, Rhythm and Hues Studios spoke about the work culture at R&H and the work they have done including Night at the Museum 1 and 2, Land of the Lost and the Alpenliebe Cream Fills TVC. Showing before and after shots and explaining the challenge the team faced in the TVC because of a lack of reference material, finally using a variety of material including a South Indian film dance. This illuminating session was followed by questions by the students. Responding to a question by a student about how an artist’s creativity would be judged, Namita said,” Art is important. You don’t go to watch Avatar and find out the software used, you find out the skills that were employed. Skills are more important than software.”
Vamsi M. Ayyagari, Sr. Executive Producer, EyeQube Studios
EyeQube Sr. Executive Producer Vamsi M. Ayyagari presented a case study of the VFX used for the film ‘Aladin‘ as well as answered student queries as to what to expect working in a studio. He said that students should first follow the rules, make the rules and finally break the rules as they grow through different stages in their careers. Vamsi said,” It’s encouraging to see the passion and optimism of the students. I am sure they will all be artists and not button operators. These endeavors help to inform them about industry realities.”
The students were treated visually with animation and VFX show reels of Prana Studios and also with the personal show reel of Samir Hoon. Samir spoke about the role of VFX in a film as a story telling tool showing visuals of Prana’s work in a few films including Delhi 6. He also addressed the students concern about the reason behind VFX driven films not being made in India, he mentioned scripts for visual effects driven films not being written, budget constraints and the fact that in India more of the budget is spent on film stars than on VFX while it is the opposite in Hollywood.
Samir Hoon, VFX President, Prana Studios
Prana’s R&D lead Vijay Anand spoke about his role in creating technology to free artists from mundane tasks so they could focus on creative work. He explained how artists request software to be developed and sometimes go on to develop software themselves. Cloth Hair Fur lead Naveen Kumar asked the students how many were interested in cloth fur and hair, to which a few students raised their hands. He then showed a video demonstrating the level of subtlety and detail practiced at Prana.
Foilage Lead Clinton Remedios, a former MAAC student himself showed the importance of foliage in beautifying a film. He show how customized his work is, depending on the creative requirements of every project. Clinton being an artist picked up programming after a mere 3 months. Rigging Lead Shreepad Agaskar took at a step by step approach as he showed how a character could be manipulated to achieve the desired effect with joints in the fingers, spine and neck etc enabling movement.
