ToonSkool signs MoU with University of the West of England for animation programs 22 November 2007 10:45 AM

Bangalore Headquartered ToonSkool Advanced Animation Academy has announced that it has signed an MoU with UWE (University of The West of England) for animation programs. The announcement was made by Anand Kannan, relationship & placements manager, ToonSkool, during a seminar at Thakur College (Mumbai) on 20th November 2007, in the presence of Chris Webster (Head of Animation, Bristol School of Animation, UWE), Mian Har Ng (Director of International Liaison and Academic Development - UWE), Prem Kapur (Prem Kapur Associates Pvt. Ltd.) and Kely Robinson (International Office - UWE).
Speaking to AnimationXpress.com about the MoU, Mian Har Ng shared, "This MoU is a collaboration between both the colleges which will facilitate the staff and the student exchange programs for training in animation and will help in the study of each others‘ animation culture. This is our first collaboration with an animation institute in India and we take it as a commitment for exchange of knowledge."

She further added "ToonSkool‘s ethos is similar to the way we do things at UWE. We might have different ways of handling things but for us, this is an excellent opportunity to know more about the Indian style of animation. We are here in India so that we can start understanding the Indian industry and students and make the most of this MoU."
Anand Kannan stated, "This MoU is basically about the overall development of animation education."
Concluded Mian, "We want to build a community where we can have a common language and collaborate on projects."
At the occasion, Chris screened some of his students‘ work and gave a background about how the movies were made. He stressed on the fact that ‘Timing gives meaning to motion‘. He explained, "These films are totally different from the Disney movies but still they have very received good response."
Continued Chris, "Animation is not just about getting ideas, good characters, or story but it is about the timing of everything in the movie."
Encouraging the students to lay emphasis on the basics, he said, "There are two things which make the difference to an idea: the mind and the heart. All the principles you are learning during your courses, remember them and use them with your mind as well as your heart, and you will definitely be able to make good animation."
Sharing some tips with the students, Chris stated, "Be aware of your heritage and know the animators who proceeded in the industry, you must get feedback for your work, as animation is not just about the techniques. Give importance to sound design in your film as well, Film making is an audio-visual art form. Give as much importance to the sound as you give to the story or the characters."
"Be interested in anything you do and if you are interested in your work, it will be interesting to others as well" concluded Chris.
