What does it feel like, sitting on the edge of a tall building, looking down, up and around?
I remember last May’s Industry Academia Interface in Mumbai which the super-efficient team at AnimationXpress had organized. Those who were there would recall that the final take-out was that we in India need to restructure our thinking towards animation content creation that’s indigenous, interesting and well-executed.
Between you and me, I came back to Bangalore extremely depressed – knowing that after all my years in animation I hadn’t really done very much original work that was campaignable or memorable. There is a bright side to this story, though, because I quite unexpectedly came across ideas for development that turned my life around. Am taking these researches forward during any spare time while teaching at Srishti, and hope that they see fulfillment as either full-fledged animated serials or even diploma projects for my students. More on that later.
The Animation department at Srishti started in July ’08, and the first batch will graduate in December 2010. That’s 2 years of study and 6 months for their Diploma Project.
What, I wondered, was at the root of all good animation? Was it the ability to act, sing, compose music, paint, draw, talk, tell stories? Not just one, all of them! With no further ado, the curriculum took shape. Courses in dramatics, art history, sound, music, film genres and literature saw the students go through a tremendous shift from their preconceived ideas on animation.
Suddenly, they were discovering the relevance of body language, the perfect phrase, film noir, traditional vis-a-vis folk art, and how data could be personified and made into interesting music! Well, that was part of the first semester’s activities that included honing drawing skills and 2D techniques in the studio classes.
If I thought that was enough to keep me occupied, I had another thing coming! Srishti loves plugging its kids into projects. So, for January and February, students from all the departments and Centres, could choose to spend those 2 months learning from various experiences.
More than 60 students signed up for the Kabir Project initiated by Ms. Shabnam Virmani, who researched and traveled across India and Pakistan over a period of 4 years, documenting and filming, among other things, several singers from the Kabir panths.
Students had the opportunity to spend time hearing and singing the poetical songs of Kabir Das, the 15th Century mystic poet, and then creating animated short films, ‘ulat bansi’ plays and objets d’art. Shabnam’s entire research culminated in the Festival of Kabir in February, for which her films, the panth singers and thousands of Kabir’s fans came together in a week-long celebration in Bangalore. This semester kept the Animation students very busy with script writing, screenplays, storyboards and their end-of-semester animated film. Right now, I can’t hear them much, except for the squeaks of pencil on paper and sound tracks being tested.
They’re also getting ready for their internships this summer, and fine-tuning their portfolios.
At the moment, the Animation department is host to a few 2nd year foundation students, who need to make a decision as to their specialization. Some of them are using these 3 weeks of immersion to see what they’re missing (in Animation) in case they choose Visual Communication or Product Design. Well, I can see they’re having fun, coming up with great ideas and working very hard, and I’m secretly hoping some of them take up animation, especially those with great drawing skills.
