According to the AnimationXpress.com MET department, come October 28 and a refreshing, artistic breeze shall lilt all across the country. Gentle Wind currents to the same effect have already started emanating and will gain strength in the days to come.
The MET report further states that the cause for this wonderful development in the Indian animation environment is the ASIFA India, TASI organized IAD celebrations which are planned to be held as a non linear Arts Mela in Mumbai and extending in multiple cities across India with special Animation screenings.
Speaking to AnimationXpress.com, ASIFA India President Saraswathi Balgam shared, "I am very excited about International Animation Day this year as it has quickly grown from a humble beginning to now being celebrated by ASIFA chapters simultaneously across 37 different countries in the world and 6 cities within India! This year we have gotten generous support from many sponsors who are now enabling us to provide the maximum number of activities that are driven by the desires of the artists while at the same time keeping the costs very low. It should be a wonderful fun filled day!"
TASI’s Hon. Secretary Tony Singh shared, "For a long time the equation read "animation = cartoon" then it changed to "animation = computer graphics". We are happy that we have been able to expand the envelope and bring various media into the fold of these celebrations. This will help to tilt the balance in favor of "animation = limitless possibilities as a medium of expression". This year one of the highlights of the IAD celebrations is that they are being held across six cities in the country. And that's great news for so many of the animation artists who have been waiting for animation events to be held in their part of the country.
The celebrations in the other cities will focus around screenings of award winning animation content ranging from short films, to commercials, to movie trailers and studio reels. The celebrations in the other cities are being held with the logistical support from varying local organizations and companies including Bangalore (with support of ABAI), Hyderabad (with support of Arena Multimedia Dilshuknagar), Kolkata (with the support of Toonz Webel Academy), Delhi (With the support of Picasso Animation) and Ahmedabad (With the support of NID) and Mumbai.
Owing to its legacy of animation events being held since the past many years as well as the fact that most of the active volunteers and organizations are located in Mumbai, the Mumbai event shall be the most elaborate one.
To be held at the impressive NCPA Tata Theatre at Nariman Point, the Mumbai leg of the IAD 06 celebrations will be a heady mix of parallel animation screening and fun art related activities.
These include
a. Screenings/activities at the Main theatre 35 mm screenings of classic animation films from the Films Division of India Archives, screening of Animagic's latest short film Maa and a very special opportunity to be the first in India to see the animated film "Monster House" which releases in India only later in the year. Furthermore, one of the highlights of the night should be the awards ceremony for the annual ASIFA India Awards of Excellence which will recognize the best in Indian student and professional animation.
