cgTantra, Frameboxx conduct Treasureboxx 08 in Chandigarh 16 July 2008 08:35 PM
By ANKITA SHAH
cgTantra and Frameboxx conducted a two day event Treasureboxx 08, as part of their Learn Inspire Grow (LIG) series, on 12 and 13 July 2008 at Chandigarh.
The two day event saw speakers like Aijaz Rashid and Kunaal Saigal from Prime Focus, Mandeep Singh from Rhythm & Hues, Mitul Patel from BR Films, Deepak Ganguly and Abhishek Chandra from TATA Elxsi, independent film maker Uttam Pal Singh, and Rohan Pannalkar and Rajesh Bhosale from BIG Animation and had a turnout of 400+.
Speaking about the objective of holding the two day event in Chandigarh, Frameboxx founder Naveen Gupta told AnimationXpress.com, “The animation industry is booming and there are a lot of aspiring students who are still not aware about the industry and about animation film making. We held this event in Chandigarh because it is away from the animation hub and there is less awareness. We wanted to create a platform where we could invite people from the industry to showcase their work.”

The event on Saturday began with a presentation on ‘Visual Effects: Changing the face of today’s advertising’ by Aijaz Rashid and Kunaal Saigal from Prime Focus. The speakers talked about the advertising industry and the usage of visual effects in the advertising scenario.
The duo showed clippings from advertisements that Prime Focus has worked on while explaining what advertising is to an audience and what it can do to a brand. Among the clippings shown were a Bajaj commercial made in the year 2000 and another which was made at the end of year 2007. Both the commercials had the same storylines but the earlier one had no VFX while the latest one did. This clearly marked the difference that CG effects can make in an advertisement.
The speakers then showed the audience the making of the Himalayan mineral water advertisement, the Ultrasonic battery commercial and the award winning Happydent White commercials. They emphasised that the most essential point to keep in mind when doing CG work for a commercial is complete involvement in the project right from the beginning. It is also important not to shift the focus from the subject matter.
The next presentation was on the ‘Making of Golden Compass’ by Mandeep Singh from Rhythm and Hues. After a brief introduction of the company and its projects, Mandeep talked about the budget, production and supervision of the film, and then how they began with the shot break-up.
He talked about what they received from the client, based on which they began with the look development, lighting etc. With the help of video clippings from the film, Mandeep explained the production pipeline that R & H followed, right from the research and search for references, background preparation, animation, compositing, simulation and the polishing of the final product.
Mitul Patel from BR Films spoke about the ‘VFX of Bhootnath’ and how it was to work on a live action film. He talked about the shooting with croma done during the film and showed the before and after scenes, explaining the process of CG and VFX production.
Sunday began with Deepak Ganguly and Abhishek Chandra from Tata Elxsi talking about ‘The animation workflow: Step by step process of animating a scene.’ The speakers showed the audience the work Tata Elxsi has done till date, including the making of Dhoom 2, Rang De Basanti, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Ta Ra Rum Pum, etc.
Regarding the animation workflow, the speakers explained how to go about planning the scene, which helps to decide how to convey the message accurately. One needs to visualize the scene before the production starts, as planning is the most important aspect when doing animation or VFX. The next step is to determine the structure of the scene through blocking, breakdown, making it linear, animation and finally polishing the scene.
They emphasised on the importance to interact with co-workers and directors, to make the animation technically correct and to take precautions that the mesh does not get deformed.
Independent animator Uttam Pal Singh Chawla, shared with the audience the methods he used while making V-Gyan for Channel V, the Santa Banta series, Tiger Sherwood and Krazy Keeda. He began with the research for his work and the references that he took for his characters and backgrounds and also talked about his experiences while making his short films, giving tips to the audience on how to get creative, making a storyboard and doing work for clients.
Rohan Pannalkar and Rajesh Bhosale from BIG Animation concluded the event with the ‘Making of Little Krishna’, the 3D tele series. They explained the stages of pre production which involved the research team taking references from downloads of temples and places; the character design, modeling, adding details of jewellery, cloth, hair, etc; rigging, rig test, adding expressions to the characters, texturing, animation, simulation and addition of special effects.
Each presentation was followed by an enthusiastic Q & A session, where the students loaded the speakers with specific as well as general questions. “The event was very successful and we got a huge response from all aspiring students, students who are already studying animation as well as professionals. I feel it is necessary for the industry and for us to keep organising these events not only in places like Mumbai and Chennai where there is already awareness but also in smaller places so as to spread more awareness,” Gupta added.
“It was a good opportunity for us to showcase our work and especially in a place like Chandigarh which has quite a lot of potential,” commented Mandeep Singh.
“I was very happy to see the enthusiastic response about the industry not only from the students but also their parents who were present there,” added Aijaz Rashid.
